Helping early-career scientists develop skills for success

Here in the REACH Lab, we study how early-career scientists engage with and persevere through challenges in their research. Our goal is to understand and promote the skills needed for success in biological science careers.

Encouraging collaboration, resilience, and confidence

Our lab works to support to the next generation’s ability to solve the grand challenges of today. We study how students develop resilience when faced with difficult tasks and problems, the ability to collaborate with diverse communities in addressing socioscientific issues, and creativity in posing biologically and socially tractable solutions.

Our work

Biology education research

We explore how students engage with community-focused research to build a stronger, more creative generation of biology researchers.

Teaching

Our teaching focuses on developing undergraduates’ and graduates’ abilities to engage in field research, critical evaluation of data, and biology teaching and learning.

Professional development

We work directly with instructors to help them design curricula for resilience and creativity and research the effects of pedagogical changes.

Learn the tools for effective pedagogy

Have you ever wondered how to help your students navigate and overcome challenge and failure in STEM? Are you curious how to design curricula to support students’ development of creative idea generation? We offer workshops for faculty across all institution types that address these and other questions and would be delighted to design a workshop to fit your needs!
